Why Lord Jagannath
Loves Poda Pitha
During the annual Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath travels from the Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple. On his return journey — Bahuda Yatra — he pauses at the Mausi Maa Temple, where Poda Pitha is offered as the sacred bhog. It is believed that in a past life as Shri Ram, the Lord had promised to return and savour this beloved cake. That divine promise lives on in every bite.
"If the Lord adores it, then the best kind of Pitha ought to be made in Puri."
Poda Pitha preparations begin on Hera Panchami and continue through the eve of Bahuda Yatra. Made from fermented rice, black gram, grated coconut and jaggery — then slow-baked overnight — it develops a slightly charred crust while remaining soft and white inside. "Poda" means burnt in Odia, and that beautiful char is exactly what makes it divine.
